Sacrifice pride and selfishness

The Bible teaches that pride goes before a fall, which can be easily proven to be true by those who live for pride and show but have a shipwreck of a life. When a person has done very grievous crimes against others it demands a great sacrifice to try to right the wrong. A good example of this is seen in the judicial system where terrible crimes are often punished with heavy financial penalties (financial sacrifice) to make restitution for the wrongs done. God has designed a system to spare the sinner from such a heavy penalty because ultimately the penalty is death. God simply asks the sinner to turn to Him in brokenness and contrition of heart. We are asked to sacrifice pride and selfishness.

Psalms 51:16 For thou desirest not sacrifice; else would I give [it]: thou delightest not in burnt offering. 51:17 The sacrifices of God [are] a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.
